Mariyam Ali
Lawyer
Mariyam was born and raised in Surrey, BC. While Mariyam graduated high school with a desire to go to law school, her journey there was far from linear. After completing her undergraduate degree at UBC in Economics, Mariyam had a short stint at the Sauder School of Business, leaving with a Master of Management Dual Degree. Having caught the business bug and a desire to be close to family, Mariyam returned to Surrey and completed a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting. Ultimately, Mariyam completed her Juris Doctor at UVic.
During law school, Mariyam volunteered with UVic’s Chapter of Pro Bono Students Canada and worked as a temporary articled student at The Law Centre, focusing on civil litigation, criminal defence, and landlord and tenant disputes. After law school, Mariyam returned to The Law Centre to complete her articles, expanding her areas of practice into human rights law.
Mariyam’s current practice focuses on litigation, family law, and wills and estates, and she has a keen interest in negotiation and mediation as forms of dispute resolution and written and oral advocacy as mediums of persuasion.
In her spare time, Mariyam enjoys water colour painting, playing tabletop RPGs, and baking. While Mariyam takes every opportunity she can to appreciate the beautiful forests and waters of Vancouver Island, she also enjoys spending time at home watching silver screen classics and old sitcoms like I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show.
